Yes, now that the autumn is in full swing, the next big event on the horizon is Christmas, and in Padstow, that of course means the Padstow Christmas Festival. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, this is a fabulous event and one you must try and get to if you love food, or Cornwall, and certainly if you love both!
From relatively humble beginnings, this has now become one of the major events on the foodie calendar, and this year features over 70 of the country’s best chefs over four days, with big names attending like Tom Kerridge, Angela Hartnett and Michael Caines, headlined of course by Cornwall and Padstow’s own Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth and Nathan Outlaw.
The harbour is taken over with two huge marquees for the festival. The biggest is the Christmas Market, with over 100 stalls featuring artisan food and drink, crafts and artwork focused on Cornwall and the West Country. It is a great place to pick up unique Christmas presents for family and friends, and also to try food and drinks from small producers that you won’t find in your local supermarket. With lots of free samples to try, plus food stalls selling all kinds of tasty plates in the dedicated food zone, you can spend the day and come out happily fed and watered.
The Christmas Market tent also contains the festival stage, which will hold chef demos showcasing the best West Country culinary talent.
The main event however is the Chef’s Theatre in the second tent which is situated outside the harbour masters office. This features demos and talks from the top chefs, with plenty of seating, and large screens so you can get close to the action and pick up the tricks of the trade. You can tell how much the chefs enjoy the festival, as there is always a great, fun atmosphere. The demos are free, but because of the popularity of the event, you need to get a ticket for each session. You’ll need to be in the ticket queue early for the big names though!
Padstow is buzzing for the festival and there are multiple events going on around the town during the weekend, including Santa’s arrival and a lantern parade on the Friday evening, followed by the traditional festival fireworks at the harbour. There is a Santa fun run on the Saturday, carol services and musical entertainment at the bandstand throughout the weekend. And of course, all the pubs and restaurants are open providing their usual quality food and drink menus.
It really is a great weekend for all the family and it runs from the 7th to the 10th of December. Do come on down, you will have a blast!
And if you’d love to spend a family Christmas in Padstow, then we still have availability for 8 people at Sandbanks for the Christmas week, commencing 22nd or 23rd of December. Check out www.harbourholidays.co.uk/Sandbanks for prices and availability.
Merry Christmas Festival!
